Ken Schofield, the outgoing Executive Director of The European Tour, was honoured at the Sports Journalists’’Association Annual Awards at the Radisson SAS Portman Hotel in London. David Howell, a member of Europe’’s victorious Ryder Cup Team at Oakland Hills Country Club in Michigan, was invited to present Schofield with the J L Manning Award for lifetime achievement in sport off the field of play.
Schofield’’s immense contribution to The European Tour during his 30 years as Executive Director was outlined by leading BBC presenter, John Inverdale. Schofield follows a distinguished group of past winners of the JL Manning Award, including Walter Winterbottom, Tony Jacklin, Sir Trevor Brooking, Sir Bobby Charlton, David Shepherd and Sir Clive Woodward.
The exploits of Europe’’s Ryder Cup Team were also praised at the ceremony, at which several of Great Britain and Ireland’’s Olympic medallists from Athens, including Kelly Holmes, Matthew Pinsent, James Cracknell, Tanni Grey-Thompson, Bradley Wiggins, Leslie Law, Amir Khan and Shirley Robertson all collected awards.
