Levy leaps into lead in Germany

Alexander Levy produced a stunning back nine to take the first-round lead at the fog-delayed Porsche European Open.

Bernd Wiesberger had set the clubhouse target with an eight under par 63 on day one as three hours and 25 minutes were lost in the morning, meaning half the field had to complete their first rounds at Golf Resort Bad Griesbach on Friday.

The mist returned on day two, with the same amount of time lost over two delays, but that was no problem for Levy who made five birdies on the way home to sign for a 62 and a one-shot lead.

The Frenchman has struggled with a wrist injury this season, missing long spells of the summer, but has been in fine form since his return at the start of the month and finished seventh at last week's Italian Open.

The 26 year old had nine holes to complete in the morning and after the second resumption at 1130 he birdied the 12th before chipping in at the 14th. He holed a 15-footer on the 16th and then hit the pin off the tee on the next before putting his approach to the last to two feet for three closing birdies.

"I had a really good day today, nine under is always nice," he said. "I made some putts with a strong finish.

"Sometimes after three months with no golf you just need to take what you did and what I did [at the Italian Open] was good for me. I just missed the last 12 holes on the last day but it was really good for me and gave me confidence for the rest of the year.

"I'm in a good mood, I'm thinking only about my game and just to enjoy it. That's what I did today and what I will try to do this afternoon."

The delay obviously helped Australian Jason Scrivener as he came out after the second stoppage and rattled off six birdies from the eighth and added another at the 15th to get to seven under.

England's Ross Fisher had nine holes to complete and he picked up three birdies before a closing blemish. His birdie at the tenth came inbetween the two delays and upon the second resumption he made a gain on the 12th and was inches from making a hole-in-one on the 14th.

"I'm obviously very pleased," he said. "Played really good yesterday, would have been nice to keep it going but these things happen.

"It was a long, frustrating morning but happy to get finished and a quick turnaround to go out again this afternoon."

Paul Dunne, Oliver Fisher, Stephen Gallacher, Jean Hugo, Soomin Lee, Mikael Lundberg, Adrian Otaegui, Matthew Southgate and Justin Walters all joined the group at five under as they completed their rounds,

Home favourite Martin Kaymer was a further shot back and he was not distracted by the delays, birdieing the tenth and 11th in the first spell of play and returning to pick up further shots on the 12th and 14th.

"Today was fine," he said. "I started with three birdies which was good.

"You really need to take advantage of those par fives. Yesterday with those two par fives on the front nine, I couldn't really use to my advantage but today was a bit different.

"Four under par is a solid start to a tournament."

The second round got under way at 1400 with the second wave going out on Saturday morning.
