Local duo revved up for 'Africa's Major'

Home favourites Branden Grace and Retief Goosen are excited to tee it up this week at the Nedbank Golf Challenge hosted by Gary Player in 'Africa's Major'.

The event takes its place on the European Tour International Schedule for the fourth time and the second time this season after Marc Leishman triumphed as part of a 30-man field in December.

The event has been around since 1981 and has 13 Major Championship winners etched on its roll of honour, including Goosen who won in 2004 - the same year he won his second US Open.

This year it forms part of the Final Series as the 2016 European Tour season edges towards its conclusion with next week's DP World Tour Championship, Dubai, and Grace and Goosen are delighted to see a home event flourish at Gary Player Country Club.

"There's nothing like it, honestly," said Grace. "It's a great week. For me growing up as a South African, this is our African Major. This is what we dream of. This is the tournament we want to play in."

Goosen added: "It's always been one of the best events in the world. Walking around, playing today, seeing what effort goes into this event, around 18, it feels like you're playing a Major Championship, there's stands everywhere.

It's amazing what they have done with this event and I'm glad that it's part of such a big Race to Dubai Final Series now - Retief Goosen

"It's amazing what they have done with this event and I'm glad that it's part of such a big Race to Dubai Final Series now."

Grace enters the week tenth in the Race to Dubai Rankings presented by Rolex as he chases a share of the Bonus Pool after another highly successful season.

The 28 year old finished fourth here earlier in the season as he started the campaign with five top tens including a win as he defended his title at the Commercial Bank Qatar Masters.

He claimed his first win on the US PGA Tour while also securing top fives at the US Open and US PGA Championship for the second year in succession, and he is now looking for a big finish to the season.

"It's been good," he said. "Every year is different. I had a good couple of years leading into this one but this year has been good. Defending the title in Qatar was pretty special and getting the win in the States was really good as well. Opened a lot of doors for myself.

"It's been a steady season, some good performances in the Majors which have been nice and that's where I want to keep knocking. So it's been good. A little bit slow towards the last couple of months but I feel the game is coming along nicely. I'm hoping for a big final push."

All aspects of your game have to be on and really the guy that's going to be playing the best golf is going to win at the end of the week - Branden Grace

Grace is seeking an eighth European Tour win - a fourth in South Africa - and knows he will face a tough test this week.

"It's brutal out there, especially when the wind starts swirling a bit," he said. "The wind, you think it's off the left and then it's off the right. I said to the guys, it makes Amen Corner look like nothing.

"It's tough to hit the fairways, the rough is brutal and it's tough to hit the greens. All aspects of your game have to be on and really the guy that's going to be playing the best golf is going to win at the end of the week."
