European Tour Member Peter Lonard of Australia lies in a share of the lead with American JL Lewis after the first round of the EDS Byron Nelson Championship after opening rounds of six under par 64.
They lead by one from World Number One Tiger Woods and fellow American Dudley Hart with Spain’’s Sergio Garcia among the group of nine players a further shot adrift on four under par 66.
The two leaders played the Cottonwood Valley Course, considered the easier of the two layouts in use this week, with Woods putting his score together on the TPC Four Seasons Resort Las Colinas.
Lonard, leading a US PGA Tour event for the firs time, equalled his lowest round on the US PGA Tour, reaching six under par with an eagle three at the 11th hole. Although he subsequently dropped a shot on the 15th he recouped that stroke with a birdie on the next hole.
“I thin this year has been pretty hard so far,” said Lonard who has missed five cuts so far this season. “I have played pretty ordinary and probably practised as hard as I ever have and got worse each week. So it was nice to actually come back and play well. I don’’t think I hit the ball that well but I definitely putted well and hit a few greens, so it was a good day.”
