Matt Fitzpatrick takes down Scottie Scheffler for RBC Heritage win

Matt Fitzpatrick claimed a second PGA TOUR title in as many months with a dramatic play-off victory over World Number One Scottie Scheffler at the RBC Heritage.

The Englishman had put himself in a commanding position over the first wo days, with a second-round 63 playing its part in him taking a three-shot lead into Sunday.

It looked like it would a be a stroll at one point as he stretched the advantage to four but when playing partner Scheffler birdied the 15th and 16th, the pressure was on.

A bogey on the last then sent it to extra holes, with the vociferous home crowds at Harbour Town Golf Links leaving the 31-year-old in no doubt who they were backing, in scenes reminiscent of his narrow defeat to Cameron Young at THE PLAYERS Championship earlier in the season.

The Ryder Cup star silenced them, however, hitting a four iron to 13 feet on the first trip back up that last and rolling in the birdie putt to rise to a career-high third on the Official World Golf Ranking.

This was Fitzpatrick's second victory on Hilton Head Island - where he holidayed with his parents as a child - after his defeat of Jordan Spieth in a play-off three years ago.

"It means the world, it means the world," he said. "This is a tournament I wanted to win growing up, arguably more than any of the Majors before I understood about the game.

"To win it twice means the world. To go out today and go toe-to-toe with Scottie and get over the line there on the 73rd is special."

After holing the winning putt, Fitzpatrick raised his hand to his ear, and the man who has been raised on UK football crowds was happy to admit he was revelling in the atmosphere.

"It didn't get out of line in terms of no one was shouting on backswings or anything like that, which was great," he said.

"I'm all for it. I love the people. They're supporting Scottie, that's great. You want golf to have an atmosphere in my opinion.

"I grew up watching football. I'm paid so much money to be out there in front of those crowds, having them chanting at you every week, it's a great feeling.

"However, there's no better feeling than coming out on top against that. There isn't a better feeling."

Fitzpatrick's win comes as part of an excellent run of success for the family, with brother Alex - with whom he will play in next week's Zurich Classic of New Orleans - having claimed a maiden DP World Tour win at the Hero Indian Open last month.

"I'm so excited for next week," he said. "My brother is playing well, as well, so yeah, hopefully keep it rolling."
