Max Kieffer and caddie Takashi Ohagen help out Kenyan community

Max Kieffer and his caddie Takashi Ohagen have been helping out some locals at this week's Magical Kenya Open Presented by Absa following an emotional encounter with a young family on the streets of Nairobi.

Ahead of this week’s event, the pair were walking to dinner when they were asked if they could provide the homeless family with some food.

After doing so, Ohagen posted on Instagram his intention to go out the following day and buy some supplies and, bolstered by donations from some of his fellow players and caddies, did just that.

The pair said seeing first-hand the mother along with her two children and their politeness was instrumental in making them go above and beyond in trying to help.

After the duo went to the local supermarket together earlier in the week, Ohagen went on his own following Thursday’s first round and bought rice, milk, sugar and flour among other items.

Ohagen said: “I was in Kenya for the first time two years ago.

“Before then I didn’t used to visit countries like Kenya. It went quite deep in my heart (the encounter with the young family). It wasn’t that it was painful, but it was sad.

“I realised I really must appreciate my life and what I have. I wanted to give these people a little bit of happiness and I am trying to help them.”

Kieffer and Ohagen are not the only participants in this weeks’ Magical Kenya Open doing something to give back to the local community. Earlier this week, Steven Brown and Benjamin Follett-Smith visited Muthaiga Primary School to plant some trees in support of the Kenya Open Golf Limited’s sustainability initiative.

The European Tour group has been involved in several similar activities which have formed a key role of the Green Drive - a strengthened commitment and approach to priority sustainability issues.
