McIlroy determined to get back to Number One

Rory McIlroy set his sights on getting back to World Number One after he maintained his recent good form with an opening 67 at the Omega European Masters.

The Northern Irishman has five top tens from eight appearances on the 2019 Race to Dubai and moved back up to second on the Official World Golf Ranking at the weekend with a victory on the US PGA Tour.

He has spent 95 weeks at the top of the Rankings during his career and with Rolex Series and World Golf Championships events to come before the end of the year, he spoke before teeing off at Crans-sur-Sierre Golf Club of trying to overhaul current World Number One Brooks Koepka.

The American has been the dominant force in world golf over the past two seasons but McIlroy is confident that if the two men are at their best, there is only one winner.

"I feel like when I'm playing my best I'm the best player in the world," he said. "I would like to get back there. It's been a goal of mine for a while.

"I haven't experienced that summit for the last four years. I feel like with the work that I'm putting in and the consistent golf that I'm playing, hopefully it's only a matter of time."

McIlroy came within a whisker of claiming his maiden European Tour victory at this event in 2008, bogeying the last and then losing out in a play-off to Jeff Lucquin, although he has done pretty well since.

He has 13 European Tour wins, including four Major Championships, but admits it would be special to lift the trophy on Sunday in the Swiss mountains.

"I played well on the back nine, which was our front nine," he said. "Played that in three under, which was good. I took advantage of a couple of the shorter par fours on the front nine but made a couple of bogeys there. Overall it was okay.

"If I have to play a tournament this week, I wouldn't want to play anywhere else. It's beautiful.

"I'm glad I'm back after all these years. Hopefully I can play good golf over the next three days and give myself a chance."
