Montgomerie To Play Volvo PGA

Montgomerie said: "The Volvo PGA Championship is very important. It’s the European Tour’s major, and I would obviously like to win the title."

Costantino Rocca, who captured the Volvo PGA Championship in 1996, will join recent winners Seve Ballesteros (1983, 1991), Bernhard Langer (1987, 1993, 1995), Ian Woosnam (1988, 1997) and José Maria Olazábal (1994), all winners of major championships, in the field.

Rocca said: "The Volvo PGA Championship is the most important tournament in Europe after the Open Golf Championship so to win it in 1996 meant so much to me."

Howard Clark (1984), Paul Way (1985), Rodger Davis (1986), Mike Harwood (1990) and Tony Johnstone (1992), other recent winners of the title, will also be bidding for the £200,000 first prize from a prize fund of £1,200,000.

Ernie Els, who has won a record three successive World Match Play Championships at Wentworth Club, is once again looking forward to the challenge of the West course as are 1998 European Tour winners Thomas Björn (Heineken Classic and Peugeot Open de España), Andrew Coltart (Qatar Masters), Stephen Leaney (Moroccan Open), Peter Mitchell (Portuguese Open) and Thomas Levet (Cannes Open).
