South Africa’s Titch Moore thwarted a brave bid by his fellow European Tour Member James Kingston to lift his second title in as many months at the Sunshine Tour’s Coca-Cola Charity Championship, hosted by Gary Player.
The overnight leader, who recorded a sensational four stroke victory on another gloomy, windy day at the Arabella Country Club, banked a winner’s cheque worth R81,700 for his eighth career win.
Moore, who carded final round 72, finished four clear of Kingston, who pushed his 54 hole aggregate score to one under 215 with a 73 that saw him tie for second with Steve Basson and Louis Oosthuizen, who both carded 71s.
It could have all been so different for Kingston. Playing the par five last, Kingston, two behind Moore, bravely went for the green in two, but sliced his three wood approach out of bounds and took seven.
“This is fantastic,” said a delighted, but mentally exhausted Moore. “I mean, I got here from The European Tour Qualifying School with three hours to spare after a 17 hour flight and got into contention right away.
“Obviously I would have taken a European Tour card, but nothing takes away from a victory. This is really good, coming off the disappointment after last week and going into the co-sanctioned events with another win.”
