O'Malley climbs into contention

Australian Peter O'Malley climbed from 60th place to a tie for third with a spectacular third round at the BMW Italian Open in Turin.

After surviving the halfway cut with nothing to spare at level par - nine adrift of Argentina's Daniel Vancsik - the 43 year old had eight birdies in his first 14 holes.

O'Malley, still remembered for playing the last five holes of the 1992 Scottish Open in seven under with two eagles and three birdies to pip Colin Montgomerie, had four of them in a row around the turn.

It moved him alongside Northern Ireland's Gareth Maybin at eight under, but O'Malley then bogeyed the 15th.

However his 64 will not have the chance to equal Maybin's opening course record 64 because placing was being allowed on the Royal Park fairways for the second day running.

His last Tour victory was eight years ago at the English Open and in dropping to 115th on the Order of Merit last season - just good enough to keep his card - he had only one top ten finish.

However, he was a runner-up in an Australian Tour event earlier this year.

England’s Chris Gane was also going well – he was five under for the day after 15 holes to reach six under, as was Alastair Forsyth of Scotland three holes further back.
