Oldcorn wins Asprey & Garrard Golfer of the Month Award for May

Andrew Oldcorn has earned a £1,000 charity donation to The Golf Foundation by winning the Asprey & Garrard Golfer of the Month Award for May following his superb victory in the Volvo PGA Championship.

Oldcorn was nominated the Asprey & Garrard Golfer of the Month in spite of strong competition from José Maria Olazábal (Novotel Perrier Open de France), Henrik Stenson (Benson and Hedges International Open) and Thomas Levet (Victor Chandler British Masters), all winners on The European Tour International Schedule, and Sergio Garcia, who gained his maiden US PGA Tour win in the MasterCard Colonial event and finished joint runner-up in the Memorial Tournament.

Oldcorn said: “Winning the Volvo PGA Championship at Wentworth was a dream come true, and I’’m delighted to have been named the Asprey & Garrard Golfer of the Month especially as the roll call of champions in May included José Maria Olazábal, Henrik Stenson, Sergio Garcia and Thomas Levet.

“I said at the time of winning at Wentworth that my victory was a testament to the strength and depth of The European Tour – and that I hoped my win would provide inspiration to a lot of other players. Well Thomas certainly grasped the baton with his victory in the Victor Chandler British Masters at Woburn last week.”

Oldcorn produced the performance of his life over the West Course at Wentworth Club to win the 2001 Volvo PGA Championship from a truly world-class field. The 41 year old Scot compiled scores of 66-66-67 and 71 for a 16 under par winning total of 272 – two shots ahead of Angel Cabrera and three in front of Nick Faldo.

Michael McDonnell, President of the Association of Golf Writers, said: “All the winners in the month of May were extremely worthy candidates for the Asprey & Garrard Golfer of the Month Award, but there can be no doubt that the most exciting win was that by Andrew Oldcorn in the Volvo PGA Championship.”

Oldcorn is the fifth winner of an Asprey & Garrard Golfer of the Month Award for 2001 following Justin Rose (January), Aaron Baddeley (February), Thomas Björn (March) and José Coceres (April).
