On the tee: US PGA Championship

Defending champion Rory McIlroy has been grouped with 2015 Major Champions Jordan Spieth and Zach Johnson for the opening two rounds of the US PGA Championship at Whistling Straits.

McIlroy is yet to officially confirm whether he has recovered from an ankle injury in time to compete in the season’s final Major Championship, but a series of Tweets would suggest he is set to tee it up alongside Masters and US Open Champion Spieth, and Open Champion Johnson at 1.20pm on Thursday.

The World Number One is one of 53 European Tour members set to compete at Whistling Straits, as is Germany’s Martin Kaymer, who won his maiden Major Championship at the venue five years ago, defeating Bubba Watson in a play-off.

Kaymer is grouped with 14-time Major Champion Tiger Woods and 2011 US PGA Champion Keegan Bradley, with the trio starting their round at 8.15am on Thursday.

Ten minutes before they tee off, there is a fascinating three-ball of Dustin Johnson, the American who came so close to winning in 2010, Rickie Fowler and Jason Day, with the trio all bidding for a Major breakthrough.

At 12.20pm, 2016 Ryder Cup captains Darren Clarke and Davis Love III will be in each other’s company, along with American Steve Stricker.

Then at 1.00pm, 2010 US Open Champion Graeme McDowell will be joined by former World Number One Luke Donald and American Ryder Cup star Patrick Reed, with Henrik Stenson, Adam Scott and Brooks Koepka teeing off ten minutes later at 1.10pm.
