Oosthuizen determined to claim more Major glory

Louis Oosthuizen vowed to keep putting in the hours as he finished second at a Major for the fifth time at the 2021 US PGA Championship.

The South African can take solace in the fact that he already has a win at one of golf's biggest four events after his triumph at the 2010 Open Championship but he has now been runner up twice at the US PGA and once at each of the other three.

He entered the weekend at Kiawah Island in a share of top spot with eventual winner Phil Mickelson but scores of 72-73 in rounds three and four meant he finished two shots behind the now six time Major winner.

At just 38 years of age, Oosthuizen still has time to add to his Major tally - as proved by Mickelson who won at 50 years and 341 days old - and the nine time European Tour winner is determined to triumph again on the biggest stage.

"I feel like I'm playing my heart out to get a second Major and I do know I have the game to do it," he said.

"This was close. My game wasn't great on the weekend. It was better today than yesterday.

"So I just need to work harder on it to get myself in contention again."

Oosthuizen cut Mickelson's five shot lead to three just after the turn but his chances of victory realistically disappeared when he found the water on the 13th.

That led to a double bogey but Oosthuizen was happy to go down swinging rather than be left wondering what may have been.

"I tried to be as aggressive as I could without doing stupid things," he said. "You know, 13, my third shot, I felt like I had to be aggressive to give myself maybe a 15 footer for par and just caught it off the heel and if it's windy like that in a crosswind the wind is going to take it into the water. It was just a bad strike.

"But coming in, I thought I hit it well, started hitting my driver really good and made good putts and a good chip on 17, and it wasn't meant to be."
