Wade Ormsby produced a spotless 62 to set the early clubhouse target on day one of the Scandinavian Invitation at Hills Golf & Sports Club.
Early starter Ormsby, who is still looking for his first win of the 2019 Race to Dubai campaign after coming up just short at the ISPS Handa Vic Open earlier in the year, fired an eagle and six birdies on Thursday to get to eight under par and surge to the top of leaderboard.
The Australian enjoyed a long stint at the top after making a fast start but required a birdie at the ninth - his last hole - to finish his round alone at the summit, with Alexander Levy a single stroke behind him after carding eight birdies and a bogey in his first round 63.
Englishman Matthew Fitzpatrick opened with a bogey free 64 to head into the clubhouse on six under.
Starting at the tenth tee, Ormsby picked up his first shot of the day at the 12th before holing his approach into the 14th with a four iron for a spectacular eagle.
The 39-year-old then reeled off three consecutive birdies at the 16th, 17th and 18th to reach the turn in 28.
Ormsby grabbed the outright lead when he got up and down from a greenside bunker at the long third hole for a birdie to move to seven under.
The Australian was briefly caught at the top of the leaderboard after Levy finished off his round with a birdie at the ninth - his last.
Ormsby continued to create chances as he made his way down the stretch but had to settle for pars until a closing birdie at the ninth saw him head into the clubhouse on eight under.
"I made a pretty straight birdie on the 12th and then at the 14th I was in between a five and a four iron, picked the right one and boxed it, so then I just got a bit of momentum through the final holes," said Ormsby.
"I felt quite comfortable out there, I was holing my return putts and that kept the round going, which added up to 62.
"I felt like I had been hitting the ball quite well, I just wasn’t quite free enough in my putting, so I was working hard on that to get back to a point where I feel more comfortable and less into my technique.
"I putted well today, didn’t putt amazing, but holed what I needed to."
Levy got off to a blistering start on Thursday morning, opening his round with back to back birdies at the tenth and 11th before taking advantage of the par three 13th and 15th.
He closed his front nine with two more birdies at the 17th and 18th to jump to six under.
Another birdie at the long third took Levy to seven under but he dropped a shot at the next before surrendering the lead altogether shortly after, when Ormsby made a birdie of his own at the third.
But Levy finished his first round with a birdie from around eight feet at the ninth to return to seven under.
Levy said: "I think I played really well today. Hit some really good shots, especially the birdie I made on the par three on the back nine, with a good shot so that was nice.
"Plus, I holed some nice putts, so that is the really good news of the day."
