Orrin and Stone share clubhouse lead

Max Orrin took a share of the clubhouse lead on the opening day of the Alfred Dunhill Championship.

The Englishman was alone at the top of the leaderboard as he stood at the 18th tee but missed his par putt at the last to join early leader Brandon Stone on five under.

Orrin, who earned his European Tour card at Qualifying School last month, reached the turn in 33 after making gains at the second and sixth holes on Thursday.

And after picking up another shot at the long 13th, Orrin fired an eagle at the 15th to join Stone at the summit.

The 22 year old took sole possession of the lead when he tapped in for another birdie at the 17th, having come within inches of holing his approach shot.

But Orrin dropped his only shot of the day at the 18th to close his round in 67 shots.

Starting his first round at the tenth tee, Stone opened his birdie account at the 11th before carding an eagle at the 13th - the hole he identified as his favourite in the world ahead of the tournament.

And a birdie at the 15th took Stone to the turn in 33 shots.

Another gain at the second saw Stone move to five under, but he dropped his first shot of the day at the par-four fourth.

Stone got one back at the sixth to return to five under before effortlessly rolling in his tricky par putt at the seventh to stay there.

Stone was pleased with his putting on day one. He said: "I holed some great putts out there. I missed a few but you can’t have them all in the first day.

"But yeah, I putted superbly well. I holed some incredible putts today.

"I think the guys this morning, for the first nine holes, really had perfect scoring conditions and I was very fortunate that I got to start on the back nine where you could pretty much get a score going."

Scotland's Scott Jamieson was also on five under after 17 holes of his first round, alongside Paul Dunne, Jean Hugo, Branden Grace and Peter Karmis.
