Parnevik rejoins European Tour

Jesper Parnevik has rejoined the European Tour, and will be eligible to collect Ryder Cup points beginning with the Trophée Lancôme which starts at Saint-Nom-La-Bretèche, Paris on Thursday (September 17).

Ken Schofield, Executive Director of the European Tour, said: "To have Jesper rejoin the Tour is superb news. A much respected Member from winning the 1988 Qualifying School until 1995, Jesper has four wins on the European Tour to date. He has twice won the Volvo Scandinavian Masters (1995 & 1988) in addition to victories in the 1993 Scottish Open and the 1996 Trophée Lancôme. Jesper’s US PGA Tour career (to date) is also based on success including his win in the Phoenix Open in January."

Parnevik made his debut for Europe in the Ryder Cup at Valderrama in southern Spain last September. He gained two points out of four which included winning his fourball with Swedish compatriot Per-Ulrik Johansson, and halving both foursomes in partnership with Spain’s Ignacio Garrido.

It has already been announced that for the 33rd Ryder Cup Matches, to be played at The Country Club, Brookline, Massachusetts, on September 24-26, 1999, the leading ten players in the European Ryder Cup Qualifying Points Table will automatically qualify and that the two Captain’s selections will be from within the Tour’s Membership. Official money gained in the three American majors (Masters Tournament, US Open and US PGA Championship) will again be included in the Qualifying Points Table in addition to the Andersen Consulting Match Play Championship (February 24-28) which is the inaugural tournament of the new World Golf Championships, sanctioned by the International Federation of PGA Tours.

All three World Golf Championships, in addition to the four majors, will count towards the 11 tournaments in which a player must compete in 1999 for Membership of the European Tour.
