The Porsche European Open will have a new home when the European Tour returns to Germany for the tournament’s 35th edition, with Green Eagle Golf Courses near the Hansestadt Hamburg announced today as the new tournament venue.
The event will be played on the North Course, one of the longest in Europe with some of the world’s best golfers competing for €2 million in prize money from July 26-30, as Hamburg hosts a prestigious European Tour event for the first time in a decade.
Tournament Director Dominik Senn, CEO of 4sports & Entertainment AG, said: “Making the move had been a medium-term goal of organisers and the title sponsor, due mainly to reasons of convenience and better infrastructure.
“Hamburg is Germany's second-largest city and also lies close to Scandinavia, and we hope fans in Denmark and Sweden will be drawn to the nearby competition,” said Senn.
“After several visits over the past few months to the North Course, officials from the European Tour believe we will be ready to host this important tournament.
Hamburg's Sports Senator Andy Grote said: "It's a very strong signal for golf in the area that such an important event as the Porsche European Open is being staged in the catchment area of our city.”
“In addition to IRONMAN Hamburg and the EuroEyes Cyclassics, we plan to host this international golfing event together with the district of Harburg and the neighbouring municipalities next year. I would like to thank all those responsible and the organizers for their commitment to sport in the entire metropolitan area."
France’s Alexander Levy edged out England’s Ross Fisher at the second hole of a tense play-off to secure the 2015 Porsche European Open title at Bad Griesbach in Germany, becoming the youngest Frenchman in history to claim three European Tour titles.
The event will be partnered by Germany's oldest private bank Berenberg, a traditional Hamburg-based company signing on as a premium partner.
Green Eagle Golf Courses welcome players ranging from the international professionals down to amateurs and beginners, with the Nord-Course rated as one of the ten longest in the world, according to the German Golf Association's Course Rating.
A total of eight tournaments have been successfully staged in Green Eagle, including the 2010 ECCO Tour Championship on the European Challenge Tour.
