Portugal Masters - Day two digest

Everything you need to know from day two at Dom Pedro Victoria Golf Course.

Paratore

The bubble boys battled hard and Smith was joined at the top of the leaderboard on day two of the 2022 Portugal Masters.

Here is everything you need to know from the second day at Dom Pedro Victoria Golf Course.

Paratore gets his feet wet

Renato Paratore is fighting to secure his card for 2023 so opted to play his second shot from the water after his tee-shot went in the drink. The Italian, who began the week 121st on the DP World Tour Rankings in Partnership with Rolex, managed to splash his ball out onto the fairway and save par. That helped him sign for a bogey-free 66, which takes him safely through to the weekend and moves him up to 118th in the projected standings, just one place away from the magic mark of 117th.

Kofstad's brilliant birdie blitz

Espen Kofstad, 114th on the Rankings at the start of the week, is another of the bubble boys looking to clinch his card in Vilamoura. After opening with a level-par 71 on Thursday, he had work to do to make the cut, but reeled off eight birdies in his first 14 holes on Friday - including four in a row from the second - to progress to the weekend. He made bogeys on the 16th and 18th but signed for a second-round 65 to sit seven shots off the lead.

Smith shines again

First-round leader Jordan Smith impressed again on Friday, finishing with back-to-back birdies at the 17th and 18th to sign for a 67 and sit alongside Gavin Green at the top of the leaderboard on 13 under. Check out this closing birdie...

Allez Les Bleus

The French flag features prominently on the leaderboard after 36 holes, with Benjamin Hebert one shot off the lead on 12 under, having followed up Thursday's 66 with a 64 to stay bogey-free for the week. Joël Stalter and Robin Roussel are two shots further back.

Horsey's remarkable run

David Horsey needed to produce something spectacular on Friday to have any chance of keeping his card after an opening 73 had put him in danger of missing the cut. But the 123rd-placed Englishman stepped up to the plate, firing five consecutive birdies from the second before carding three more birdies and one bogey on the back nine to reach the weekend and keep his hopes alive.
