Ian Poulter put himself into contention with a battling 65 on day three of the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational.
The Englishman began the day on level par after opening rounds of 68 and 72 saw him sit eight shots off the lead held by Jim Furyk at the halfway stage at Firestone Country Club, but he surged up the leaderboard after going five under par on Saturday.
The Ryder Cup star came out of the blocks with intent, sending his approach shot at the first to within five feet of the hole, before rolling in to pick up a shot at the earliest opportunity.
Poulter drained his ten foot putt at the second to go two under, before rolling in from 20 feet at the next to make his third straight gain.
After safely parring the fourth and fifth, Poulter sank his long range birdie putt at the sixth before a dropped shot at the seventh and two further pars took him to the turn in 32.
Poulter then birdied the tenth to get back to four under, before making par at the 11th and 12th.
The 39 year old recovered from a bogey at the 13th with a gain at the 14th before picking up another shot at the last.
Poulter was pleased with his score. He said: "It was pretty good. I haven't played my best golf in the last couple of months.
"I got off to a nice start today, which is just what I needed."
Meanwhile Australia's Steven Bowditch gave the chasing pack plenty of hope with a brilliant third round of 63 on Saturday.
The 32 year old got off to a strong start, picking up four shots on the front nine to reach the turn in 31, before carding four birdies and a bogey on the back nine to post the joint lowest score of the week and move to five under.
He said: "The front nine was very much a struggle again with my golf swing. I felt uncomfortable, and I was stuck in some places.
"Then I made a really good swing on 14. I hit a really good drive down there and created a feeling that I had the last sort of six or seven weeks.
"From there, I didn't miss a golf shot. I hit it dead where I wanted to hit it basically. Hopefully, I can carry it into tomorrow."
