Reed edging closer to victory

Patrick Reed does not believe he is far from a second European Tour title after losing out to Kristoffer Broberg in a dramatic play-off at the BMW Masters.

Patrick Reed reacts after missing his birdie on the 72nd hole

The American led by a single shot at Lake Malaren Golf Club when stood on the 17th tee but bogeyed the penultimate hole to drop into a play-off which Broberg won with a birdie on the 18th.

The second-placed finish continues a fine season for the 25 year old whose worst result in 11 events was a tie for 30th at the US PGA Championship.

It was also his third top ten in a row and moved him into the top 15 in The Race to Dubai, putting him in contention for the Bonus Pool awarded after next week's season-ending DP World Tour Championship, Dubai.

And while he admitted some disappointment at not claiming victory in Shanghai, he does not feel he is far away from adding to last season's World Golf Championships - Cadillac Championship title.

"It is what it is," he said. "Of course, I'm not happy and not pleased with the result. But at the end of the day, if you would have told me I would have come over, finish second, I wouldn't have teed it up this week; I would have taken it and left.

"It was a solid week and I just have to build on it and have to do things just a little bit better to get in the winner's circle.

"It's a definite improvement. Obviously it shows the things I'm working on are getting better because last year, it seemed like I started off strong with a win but was flat throughout the rest of the year until this end run.

"So we're doing the right things. I just need to keep on plugging along and hopefully close one out here shortly."

Reed's appearance in Dubai next week will take him to the 13 events required to keep his European Tour membership for next year and following his near miss in China, he took to Twitter to express his delight at being able to play on both sides of the Atlantic.

"Proud to be a member of the European and PGA Tour," he said "What an experience so far! Next stop, The Atlantis in Dubai."

Henrik Stenson finished a shot outside the play-off after a late surge up the leaderboard catapulted him into contention for victory.

He was one over for his round stood on the 11th tee but birdied the 11th, 13th, 14th, 15th and 16th and is hoping to use that momentum as he defends his title in Dubai.

"I saw it was a really tight leaderboard," he said. "It was just a shame on the last I didn't get it to the hole. If I would have put that one in, it would have been in the play-off.

"It's a good rehearsal for next week for sure. I'm really looking forward to coming back to Dubai, trying to win that one for the third time in a row.

"I played nicely throughout this week and just need to make a few more on the greens."
