Retief Goosen: Asprey Golfer of the Month for April

Retief Goosen, runner up to Tiger Woods in the 2002 Masters Tournament, has won the Asprey Golfer of the Month Award for April. He earns a £1,000 charity donation to The Golf Foundation.

Goosen, winner of the Volvo Order of Merit and the US Open Championship in 2001, captured the BellSouth Classic at TPC Sugerloaf, Atlanta, the week before moving on to Augusta National. In total, he was 25 under par in Atlanta and Augusta.

The Asprey Golfer of the Month Award is presented to a European Tour Member each month from January to November for his performances on The European Tour and in worldwide competition.

The 33 year old South African, whose compatriot Ernie Els won the Asprey Golfer of the Month Award for March, was judged the winner by a panel from the Association of Golf Writers, television and radio who met with representatives of Asprey, the ultimate authentic British luxury lifestyle house, and The European Tour to discuss a host of contenders.

These included Sweden’’s Carl Pettersson (Algarve Open de Portugal) and Spain’’s Sergio Garcia (Canarias Open de España), both winners on The European Tour International Schedule, Scotland’’s Colin Montgomerie, who captained Great Britain and Ireland to victory in The Seve Trophy, Spain’’s Seve Ballesteros, who enjoyed a thrilling win against Montgomerie in The Seve Trophy, and Korea’’s Charlie Wi, who completed a successful defence of the SK Telecom Open – his fifth win on the Davidoff Tour.

Other winners of the Asprey Award this season have been Justin Rose (January), José Maria Olazábal (February) and Ernie Els (March).
