Ever since Seve Ballesteros undertook his remodelling of the greens at Crans-sur-Sierre in 1999, being able to manoeuvre one’s way around the putting surfaces has been a necessity to success in the Omega European Masters, a fact proved conclusively once again by this year’s champion Brett Rumford. The Australian finished sixth in the Putts per Greens in Regulation category with an average score of 1.647 while he was even better in the Putts per Round category, finishing fourth with an average tally of 27.0. He also rescued himself five times out of seven from the sand in his 72 holes, a healthy average of 71.4% which helped him on his way to the €333,330 (£225,488) first prize.
