Sam Torrance has been named Asprey Golfer of the Month for September following Europe’’s victory at The De Vere Belfry in The 34th Ryder Cup Matches. He earns a £1,000 charity donation to The Golf Foundation.
Asprey will also recognise Europe’’s victory by presenting each Member of Torrance’’s Team, including Vice Captain Ian Woosnam and backroom staff Joakim Haeggman and Mark James, with a specially engraved Alms dish.
Torrance followed in the footsteps of recent European winning Captains Tony Jacklin, Bernard Gallacher and Seve Ballesteros when Europe regained The Ryder Cup with a 15½-12½ victory against the United States.
Torrance said: “I’’m delighted to accept the Asprey Golfer of the Month Award on behalf of each and every member of the Team including Ian Woosnam, Joakim Haeggman and Mark James. The atmosphere in the Team Room was terrific throughout the entire week and we’’ve all been on a high since winning the Cup back. I would like to thank Asprey for this Award and for recognising the entire squad. This was truly a Team performance.”
Edward Asprey, New Business Director of Asprey, the ultimate authentic British luxury lifestyle house, said: “Sam’’s nomination as Asprey Golfer of the Month for September reflects not only his very special inspirational skills of leadership, but also the magnificent performances of each and every one of the 12 players. This was truly an outstanding Team performance, as millions around the world witnessed, with Sam marshalling his men in a most magnificent manner. In short, he played a tremendous round of golf without hitting a shot! We are also delighted to be making a special Award to each Member of Sam’’s squad.”
Torrance was judged the winner by a panel from the Association of Golf Writers and television personnel who met with representatives of Asprey and The European Tour to discuss another distinguished list of contenders.
Sweden’’s Robert Karlsson led from start to finish to win the Omega European Masters; Australia’’s Stephen Leaney earned a five year exemption to The European Tour by capturing the Linde German Masters; and Sergio Garcia set a new tournament record when he won the Kolon Cup Korean Open at the Seoul Hanyang Country Club with a 23 under par total of 265.
Other winners of the Asprey Golfer of the Month Awards this year have been Justin Rose (January and May), José Maria Olazábal (February), Ernie Els (March and July), Retief Goosen (April), Miles Tunnicliff (June) and Graeme McDowell (August). The Asprey Golfer of the Month Award is presented to a European Tour Member each month from January to November for his performances on The European Tour International Schedule and in worldwide competition.
