The ninth edition of the Volvo Scandinavian Masters will be played at Barsebäck Golf and Country Club in Malmo, Sweden, where the tournament was previously held in 1992, 1995 and 1997.
The 1999 Volvo Scandinavian Masters will have a new date (August 5-8) and minimum prize money of £1,000,000 as announced on September 7, by the Swedish Golf Federation.
Ken Schofield, Executive Director of the European Tour, said: "The three previous Volvo Scandinavian Masters to be played at Barsebäck have produced quite outstanding champions with the victories of Nick Faldo, Jesper Parnevik and Joakim Haeggman.
"Indeed the Volvo Scandinavian Masters has a tradition of being won by great champions with Colin Montgomerie, Peter Baker, Vijay Singh and Lee Westwood also winners and, of course, Jesper won for a second time this year. We look forward to another superb tournament in 1999, congratulate the Swedish Golf Federation and all whose commitment has made the Volvo Scandinavian Masters such an integral part of the European Tour. We thank Volvo for their continuing generous sponsorship."
Lars Thonning, Managing Director of Volvo Scandinavian Masters AB, said: "It is always a great pleasure for us and our sponsors to return to Barsebäck and to be able to provide the finest available course for European Tour Members. We look forward to another great tournament."
The composite course at Barsebäck, known as the "Scandinavian Masters Mix", begins as a park course (seven holes), continues as a tough links (four holes) and finishes with seven beautiful holes in the forest. Eleven holes are taken from Barsebäck’s Old Course, designed by Ture Bruce, a Swedish golf architect, and built in 1969-70, and the other seven from the New Course. Donald Steel, who designed the New Course which was built at the beginning of the 1980s, has also modernised some holes on the Old Course.
A crowd of 28,000 excited fans roared Haeggman to a four stroke victory in 1997. He said: "I’d rather win the Volvo Scandinavian Masters than anything else in Europe, except maybe the Open Championship."
