Sensational 65 puts Fleetwood in contention

Tommy Fleetwood produced a sparkling 65 on day two of the 147th Open Championship to propel himself into contention.

Race to Dubai champion Fleetwood holds the course record at Carnoustie after posting a 63 at last year's Alfred Dunhill Links Championship and he was in fine form on Scotland's east coast once again on Friday, carding six birdies and no bogeys in difficult conditions to get to five under par.

That left him a single shot behind halfway leaders Zach Johnson and Kevin Kisner.

Fleetwood began the day one over par after Thursday's opening 72 but soon set about making amends, rolling in birdie putts from ten and 20 feet and the fourth and fifth respectively to get to one under.

With the rain pouring down at Carnoustie, Fleetwood produced a phenomenal par save from 18 feet at the eighth to keep the momentum going, before adding another birdie at the ninth from long range.

After picking up further shots at the 11th and 14th, Fleetwood holed his birdie putt from just short of 20 feet at the 18th to sign for a 65 - the best round of the week so far.

Johnson went on to take the outright lead after he also birdied the last but Fleetwood was delighted with his second round.

He said: "Today's been a round where I've put myself back in the tournament and I've just got to move on from there really.

"I'll just try and keep doing the same things.

"If I can hit it like I did today then, obviously, I'm going to have a lot of chances coming in over the weekend, and we'll see where that takes me."

Overnight rain made conditions significantly different from Thursday's sun-baked first day at Carnoustie and with the drizzle continuing into Friday morning, Fleetwood had to use an umbrella provided by the Open as he did not have one in his bag.

"Everybody seems to want to know about the umbrella," he added.

"We got one given for free. We don't always carry an umbrella.

"So it just so happens this week that we've got a nice Open Championship brolly. It looked quite nice."
