This compelling retelling of the life and career of Spanish phenomenon Seve Ballesteros merges authentic archive (Major memories, insightful interviews and previously unseen footage) with dramatic flashbacks to capture the true essence of a golfing legend.
The film shows how Seve grew from a young boy (15-year-old doppelgänger Jose Luis Gutierrez) playing golf on the beaches of his native Pedrena into a world number one who would define his era.
The filmmakers’ initial inspiration was 2010’s Senna, a documentary biopic about another charismatic and flamboyant product of Latin blood who lit up his generation like a comet and whose appeal transcended his sport. But that’s all Senna and Seve shared in common.
For unlike Senna, a man born of privilege, Seve ran a rags-to-riches gauntlet, overcoming adversity at every turn. When Senna wanted to drive, he was handed the keys to a gleaming jeep and allowed the freedom of his father's enormous estate. When Seve wanted a driver, he was eventually given a rusty three-iron head and was only permitted to practise with pebbles on the beach.
Despite being continually hampered in pursuit of the sport he loved, Seve's genius found a way. His innate ability was not alone enough, though. We discover that huge brotherly support, early recognition of his talents by a friendly member at his local course, and even a class-war wager (where his father bets his finest livestock on young Seve beating Spain's amateur champion) were all vital components.
In short, it was his family's unswerving faith in fragile hope that relaxed the reins, allowing Seve's skills to reach their zenith. Passionate, disciplined, and never afraid to question the status quo - cue a suite of issues challenging authority - this hybrid feature film splices the spirit and heart of the great man into a framework of stunning footage from his career and later retirement. Shot on location in Seve's hometown and course of Pedrena, the movie provides a definitive and emotive take on European golf’s leading man.
The Ryder Cup will always be Seve’s legacy, though, so now is the perfect time to remember how his unique determination helped turn the biennial battle from an uncompetitive sideshow into the global sporting feast we’re about to witness at Gleneagles.
Succeeding against the odds is one thing. Doing it in the most cavalier and stylish way is quite another. As the Miracle At Medinah proved, nobody did it better than Seve.
