Great Britain & Ireland’s Seve Trophy rookie Marc Warren paid an unscheduled visit to hospital last night after attempting a practice swing with a five iron in his hotel suite at The Heritage Golf & Spa Resort and sending a glass chandelier crashing down on top of himself.
He sustained a deep cut on his abdomen that required butterfly stitches in hospital, plus five minor cuts on each of his arms and a nick on his forehead – but the Scot felt comfortable enough to play today in partnership with Colin Montgomerie against the in-form French pairing of Raphaël Jacquelin and Gregory Havret.
The incident happened at 7.15pm in his ground floor room at the five star Heritage Hotel in Killenard, Co. Laois just before he was due to go out to dinner with GB & I team-mate Bradley Dredge from Wales in his ground floor suite at the 5-star Heritage Hotel in Killenard, Co. Laois.
He called Dredge to cancel the dinner, then alerted both his playing partner and the team captain Nick Faldo.
“I wish I had used a six iron – I’d have missed it,” said Marc, who didn’t get back to the hotel until 10pm. “There was plenty of blood and a towel I held to my stomach was covered when I arrived at the hospital, but the only thing that hurt was the scratch on my head. I feel fine about playing today.”
