The World has a new Number One golfer after European Tour Honorary Member Vijay Singh, of Fiji, ended Tiger Woods’’s 264-week reign at the top of the Official World Golf Ranking with victory in the Deutsche Bank Championship at the TPC at Boston, Massachusetts.
Singh, the US PGA Champion, was under pressure throughout a titanic final day as his playing partner in the final group, Woods, fought hard to keep his crown as the World Number One. But just as Woods drew level, the Fijian responded with birdies on the 15th and 17th and 18th to finish three strokes clear and become the new World Number One.
Both players closed with a 69, giving Singh a three stroke victory with a 16 under par total of 268.
Woods was World Number One for a record 264 consecutive weeks but Singh, in claiming his sixth title of the year, was not to be denied as he became the 12th player to hold the Number One spot in the history of the Official World Golf Ranking.
Woods finished tied second with defending champion Adam Scott of Australia, like Singh a Member of The European Tour, who shot a blistering back nine in a final round of 65 for a 13 under par total of 13 under par and joint second place
