Stenson stays in the hunt

Swedes Jonas Blixt and Henrik Stenson were just two shots behind leader Jason Dufner as a thrilling third round unfolded at the US PGA Championship.

Dufner looked to be continuing the form that brought him a Major record-equalling 63 on Friday when he pulled four shots clear after four holes.

But the American Ryder Cup star double bogeyed the fifth after driving into the water and at seven under was now just one ahead of compatriot Jim Furyk and Masters Tournament winner Adam Scott.

Stenson and Blixt were both on five under – the latter after turning in a three under 32 and adding five straight pars on the back nine.

His compatriot Stenson, third at the Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Open and second in both The Open Championship and WGC-Bridgestone Invitational on his last three starts, bogeyed the second but almost got it back on the sixth after a fantastic approach to ten feet.

England’s Lee Westwood was a shot further back after playing his first 14 holes in three under, with David Lynn and Rory McIlroy both on three under – the latter chipping in at the last to boost his chances of defending the title he won last year at Kiawah Island.

Westwood bogeyed the 15th but parred the last three holes to card a 68 and join McIlroy in the clubhouse on three under, although that was three behind playing partner Jonas Blixt.

Blixt carded four birdies in a flawless 66, the last of which came on the 18th after his tee shot had flown straight into a spectator's trouser pocket. From there Blixt received a free drop - "I'm just glad it wasn't plugged," he joked - and hit a five iron approach to three feet.

"All in all it was very good," Westwood said of his round. "I figured somewhere around 67 might give me a chance going into tomorrow. Another Sunday at a Major, another chance."

The bad news for Westwood was that the leaders had settled down after their early struggles, with Jim Furyk making birdies on the eighth, tenth and 12th to take the lead on nine under, one ahead of Dufner who had followed a birdie on the seventh with a bogey on the eighth and birdie on the tenth.
