Sullivan storms ahead in Portugal

Andy Sullivan moved himself into a commanding position on day two at the Portugal Masters as he fired a second consecutive 64 to open up a four-shot lead at Oceånico Victoria Golf Club.

The Englishman had held a share of the lead overnight alongside Nicolas Colsaerts and was flawless in his second round, posting seven birdies to establish a cushion over Eduardo de la Riva and Bernd Wiesberger.

Wiesberger also got round in 64 as the Austrian showed some ominous form of his own but all eyes were on Sullivan as he made the most of the favourable early scoring conditions.

The 28 year old is looking for a third title of the season after winning the The South African Open Championship Hosted by the City of Ekurhuleni and the Joburg Open earlier in the year and got off to a flying start by birdieing the tenth.

He followed that with another gain on the 13th and when he picked up further shots on the 15th and 17th, he had turned in 32.

He picked up two more shots on the second and fifth and then chipped in from off the green on the 510 yard par four seventh to make it consecutive birdies on the most difficult hole on the golf course.

"Seven was just ridiculous," he said. "We were just thinking to ourselves just ten feet for par would really be nice. To see it go in was a massive relief, not having to have that putt coming back."

He was not the only person on the course producing content for the highlight reel, though, as Wiesberger conjured up something special of his own on the second.

The Alstom Open de France champion turned in 33 after starting on the tenth and then eagled the second as he hit a lob wedge from 63 yards and saw it spin back into the hole from 15 feet beyond the pin.

Wiesberger then picked up birdies on the fifth and seventh to get to ten under alongside De la Riva who recovered well after two early bogeys.

The Spaniard was one over for the day at the turn after three bogeys and two birdies but he picked up shots on the tenth, 11th, 14th, 15th and 17th to get himself back into contention.

Tommy Fleetwood was then at nine under after hitting eight birdies and a single bogey in his 64, alongside Trevor Fisher Jnr who was three under after three birdies in his opening five holes.

Thomas Bjørn recovered from bogeys on the 11th and 12th to register his second 67 of the week and he was alongside Colsaerts and Thomas Pieters who had played six and five holes respectively.

Alvaro Quiros, Hennie Otto and Thomas Aiken were then all in the clubhouse at seven under with Kristoffer Broberg also in that group having played six holes.

Benjamin Hebert was the fourth man to shoot a 64 on Friday but that was only good enough to get him to three under after an opening 75.

Daniel Gaunt, Edouard Espana, Ben Evans and Renato  Paratore were all in the group two shots further back on the provisional cut line and hoping to make the weekend as they battle to make the top 110 in the Race to Dubai.

Due to the threat of bad weather on Saturday, it was announced that round three would be a shotgun start beginning at 0800 with the leaders teeing off from the first hole.
