One of world golf’s most picturesque locations – Loch Lomond Golf Club – will, for the 15th successive year, play host to The Barclays Scottish Open in July. Defending champion will be Germany’s Martin Kaymer who enjoyed a fantastic spell 12 months ago, triumphing in Scotland a week after his victory in the Alstom Open de France.
Conventional wisdom states that the week after you win a tournament on The European Tour you are so drained, both mentally and physically, then you cannot be expected to perform to any standard the following week. If that is the case, then no-one shared that particular script with Kaymer.
Seven days after beating Lee Westwood in Paris, the German was on the title trail once again, four sublime rounds in the 60s good enough for a two shot victory over Spain’s Gonzalo Fernandez-Castaño and Raphaël Jacquelin of France who stormed through the field with matching weekend rounds of 66-66. However, at the head of affairs, Kaymer’s performance saw his earnings for the two week spell reach an eye popping total of €1,246,000 and it also saw him follow Sterne as a back-to-back winner in the 2009 season, the South African having won in consecutive weeks in his homeland in December.
