The Debrief: Turkish Airlines Open

A dramatic Turkish Airlines Open was won by Tyrrell Hatton after six men were tied for the lead at the end of the fourth round.

The Englishman prevailed on the fourth extra trip down the 18th after he and Matthias Schwab were the last men standing under the floodlights.

Here, we take a look at the highlights of the week at The Montgomerie Maxx Royal in Antalya.

Hats off to Tyrrell

Hatton's victory in the play-off gave the 2017 Italian Open winner a second Rolex Series success of his career. He joins Jon Rahm, Alex Noren, Justin Rose, Danny Willett and Bernd Wiesberger as a multiple Rolex Series winner. The victory - his fourth on the European Tour - earned him $2million, moved him up to sixth on the Race to Dubai Rankings Presented by Rolex and gave him a spot in the top 30 in the Official World Golf Rankings.

Six of the best

There had only been two other six man play-offs in European Tour history. Scot Stephen McAllister won the 1990 Vinho Verde Atlantic Open while England's Mark Foster triumphed at the 2003 Dunhill Championship. This time, Hatton, Schwab, Benjamin Hebert, Victor Perez, Kurt Kitayama and Erik van Rooyen all finished level after 72 holes. Hebert, Perez and Van Rooyen fell at the first extra hole as Hatton, Schwab and Kitayama made birdies- though Hatton needed a dramatic chip in to stay alive.

The second extra trip down the 18th saw Kitayama miss a six footer for victory and the American was out of contention after the third when he failed to match birdies from Hatton and Schwab. Hatton missed a short putt for birdie after laying up on the next but Schwab missed a short one of his own after chipping over the green and the resulting bogey gave the Englishman victory. Hatton said: "I actually can't believe that I've won. It's been quite a difficult year in terms of things happening off course and the last month I feel like I really found my game again."

Mr Consistent

Schwab narrowly missed out on his maiden European Tour win but the Austrian continued his impressive run by securing a tenth top ten of the season and climbed to 14th on the Race to Dubai. The 24-year-old said: "It was a close call. I had some good looks and good chances coming down the stretch in regular play and didn't take advantage of them. In the play-off, it is what it is."

Hebert goes close again

Another having an impressive campaign is Hebert, who's up to 15th on the Race to Dubai after a third top two of the season. All three of those finishes - with the other two the Volvo China Open and the Aberdeen Standard Investments Scottish Open - have seen the Frenchman match the score of the tournament winner over 72 holes before being beaten in a play-off. The 32-year-old's first European Tour win is surely coming soon.

Birthday boys celebrate with cake

Hatton wasn't the only one celebrating in Antalya this week. Francesco Molinari and Jordan Smith were both in the picturesque surroundings of The Montgomerie Maxx Royal to mark their birthdays - and each of them were given cakes. Mind you, we're not so sure how much of Smith's he managed to eat after this.
