The keys to putting tempo with Matteo Manassero

Whether it be on the range or the putting green, players are always honing their craft week-to-week on the DP World Tour.

Ahead of this week’s Magical Kenya Open presented by Absa at Karen Country Club, former professional golfer turned broadcaster Inci Mehmet caught up with Matteo Manassero to explore a drill he uses to refine his putting tempo.

A five‑time DP World Tour winner and a dual PGA TOUR member last season, the Italian remains a fierce competitor, yet he’s constantly searching for ways to sharpen his performance on the greens.

Using a training device attached to his putter shaft, Manassero receives real‑time feedback on his aim relative to the target as well as the loft of the putter face at address. With it, his main objective is to build a repeatable stroke with a consistent tempo.

“In this case, I’m looking at the tempo of my putting,” he explains. “I aim for a tempo around 2.0. I’ll hit four or five putts, place a marker where that group finishes, then remove the balls and repeat the process—this time a bit freer, but still checking the numbers.

“That helps me set my tempo, which is really important for me. I have certain tendencies I like to monitor, especially with alignment. Getting that right supports both clubface delivery and pace control.”
