The Open Championship will return to Royal Lytham & St Annes in 2028.

The 156th Open will be played at Royal Lytham & St Annes from 3-6 August 2028

It will be the 12th time the venue on the north-west coast of England has hosted golf's oldest Major and the first since 2012.

Back then, Ernie Els won The Open for the second time in his career, with the South African finishing one shot ahead of Australia's Adam Scott, who bogeyed each of his final four holes.

Mark Darbon, Chief Executive of The R&A, described Royal Lytham & St Annes as "one of golf’s most cherished and historic venues".

The announcement comes on the 100-year anniversary of Bobby Jones winning The Open when it was first played over the famous Fylde links in 1926.

Later this year, the world’s best women’s golfers will compete in the AIG Women’s Open at Royal Lytham & St Annes from July 30 - August 2.

Tim Walker, Chairman of Council at Royal Lytham & St Annes, said: "The Club has a long and successful association with The Open, and we take great pride in our place within the Championship’s history."

As a result of the 2028 Olympic Games, the final men's Major Championship of the year will take place later than usual, to avoid clashing with the playing of the men's and women's golf competitions from July 19-29.

This year's Open Championship will take place at Royal Birkdale from July 16-19.

In 2027, St Andrews' Old Course will stage the event for a record-extending 31st time.
