Thomas Detry speaks about adapting to the 'bubble'

Thomas Detry opened up about being involved in the bio-secure tournament 'bubble' during the six week UK Swing on the European Tour.

The Belgian has played in all four events since competitive golf returned following the four month hiatus caused by the coronavirus pandemic.

Provisions have been put in place since last month's resumption, which began at the Betfred British Masters hosted by Lee Westwood at Close House Golf Club, including daily testing and temperature checks on arrival for the 500+ personnel on site and all of those staying at the venue for the duration of the tournament.

They have to dine on site too, meaning there is plenty of spare time for everyone involved and Detry, who narrowly missed out on his maiden European Tour title at the Hero Open, gave an insight into what life is like in the new normal.

"It’s not easy playing all these tournaments but I’m still feeling great to be honest," Detry said.

"I’m taking these tournaments very easily, I managed to get on (site on) Wednesday which gives me two and a half days at home – leave on Sunday and get on site on Wednesday.

"It gives me a lot of rest at home, I take it pretty easily and I’m pretty much ready to go on Thursday morning.

"I’m slowly getting used to it. It’s still not easy having to work out with a mask on but I’m missing my coach, it’s such a big part of my routine to see him before and after my round so not having him around is definitely a minus point but I've managed to do well without him so let’s keep it that way."

Andrew 'Beef' Johnston has been using his spare time to work on his game and it seems to be paying off at the 2020 Celtic Classic, sitting in a tie for third alongside Detry at nine under par.

"Yesterday evening I wasn’t happy with how I was hitting the ball, I went down and spent an hour or an hour and a half on the range," Johnston said.

"I just said to myself, I’ve tried everything, let’s just see what happens. If I play well, great, if I don’t so be it.

"I’m working on the right things and doing the right things and it’s just about patience now. I’m working hard so that let me free up and play."
