Lucas Bjerregaard and Kristoffer Broberg were battling it out for a first European Tour win during the final round of the BMW Masters but they had an ominous chasing pack gathering behind them.
Broberg turned in 33 with Bjerregaard taking one more shot on the front nine as the duo got to 16 under but Paul Casey, Ian Poulter and Sergio Garcia were just a shot behind.
They have 36 European Tour titles between them and with Byeong-hun An, Thongchai Jaidee and Patrick Reed all at 14 under, a thrilling Sunday afternoon was in store at Lake Malaren Golf Club.
Danny Willett was eight shots off the lead in a share of 23rd through 16 holes but that would be enough to move him into first place in The Race to Dubai heading into the season-ending DP World Tour Championship, Dubai.
Overnight leader Jaidee was soon caught by Bjerregaard who birdied the first with playing partners Reed and Broberg also getting off to the ideal start.
Poulter then made a gain to get within two of the lead and countryman Matthew Fitzpatrick, in search of a tenth top ten of the season made gains on the second and third to sit a shot further back.
Garcia dropped a shot on the first to drop two behind the leaders and he was soon three back as Bjerregaard made it a birdie-birdie start to move out in front on his own at 16 under.
A bogey from An on the second dropped him to 13 under but Broberg was heading in the other direction and he birdied the fourth to move into a share of second.
He was soon second on his own as Jaidee, after brushing the edge on the two previous holes, dropped a shot on the fourth with Garcia getting back level for the day after a beautiful tee shot on the par three.
Reed birdied the fifth to get to 14 under but it was playing partner Bjerregaard who was making all the running and a third birdie of the day handed him a two shot lead.
Thomas Pieters had opened his round with a bogey but three birdies in four holes from the third put him alongside An, Poulter and Casey at 13 under, with the latter having birdied the fourth.
Casey made another gain on the seventh and Poulter birdied the ninth to join the group at 14 under but it was all change at the top when the penultimate group reached the eighth.
Bjerregaard found a bunker off the tee and his second shot ended up underneath a bridge forcing him to take a drop which resulted in a bogey. Broberg, meanwhile, put his second shot to eight feet and made a birdie to move out in front at 17 under.
A bogey on the ninth saw him drop back to 16 under, though, and with birdies for Garcia on the eighth, and Poulter and Casey on the tenth, the Ryder Cup trio were just a shot off the lead.
An birded the eighth to get to 14 under alongside Reed and Jaidee.
Pieters was then at 13 under through 11 holes with Søren Kjeldsen alongside him with five birdies and an eagle in 14 holes.
Justin Rose was then 12 under through 12 with Andy Sullivan the clubhouse leader a further shot back after a closing 65.
