Tips from the pros with John Bickerton

Europeantour.com caught up with Englishman John Bickerton at the Maybank Malaysian Open to discover the secret to his precision off the tee that has seen him move to second in the Genworth Financial Statistics’ Driving Accuracy Category.

Bickerton has recorded ten rounds of stats this season and has found 100 fairways in that short space of time, giving him a 71.4 per cent average.

So what is the secret to his unerring accuracy?

He said: “I don’t get the distance that most of the guys get so I focus a lot more on the accuracy because I can’t get that if I start to thrash at the ball.

“The secret to straight driving, like most things in golf, is repeating the swing. If you get a technique that works for you then you just have to keep repeating it and repeating it: that’s what you work on in golf.”

Many amateur players find the temptation to thrash at their ball when standing in the tee irresistible, but Bickerton insists that club golfers should focus more on their timing and making sure that the club face is perfectly square to the ball at impact if they want to improve their driving accuracy.

He said: “An old pro said to me once: ‘hit it better not harder’, and there is a lot to be said in that.”
