Tom McKibbin feeling just ace after hole-in-one in South Africa

Tom McKibbin fired a spectacular hole-in-one in his impressive opening round of 67 at the Investec South African Open Championship.

The 19-year-old from Northern Ireland aced the par-three 11th as well as posting five birdies and a couple of bogeys.

He said: "It was a perfect five iron. Caddie Chris just said, 'go right at it'. I went right at it and it didn't really leave the flag.

"You can't really see it because it's uphill so I heard everybody cheering and knew it was in. It was pretty cool."

On his round, which leaves him three shots off the pace set by South African Thriston Lawrence, McKibbin said: "It was very good. We played a lot better after the turn but played really solid from after the third hole and it was just a really good day."

The course measures a DP World Tour record 8,161 yards but McKibbin is enjoying the challenge.

He added: "It's really good. It's long, very challenging. I definitely enjoyed the test. You've got to hit it in the right positions. The greens are big. Some of them you can hit them and be very far away.

"I seem to play quite good out here (South Africa). The altitude can be tricky, especially when it's windy so you've got to really trust it.

"But I enjoy playing out here. The ball goes a long way. You can be 180 yards out and only hitting an eight or a seven-iron. It definitely makes a difference.

"I'm really looking forward to the rest of the week. The course is great."

Earlier in the day, Hennie du Plessis aced the 221-yard third hole to quickly cancel out a double-bogey at the first and post the first hole-in-one of the new season.
