Top 10 Shots - DP World Tour Championship

In each and every year since the first edition of the DP World Tour Championship in 2009 we have witnessed some spectacular shot-making at the showpiece event at Jumeirah Golf Estates in Dubai.

Henrik Stenson plays the 2013 Shot of the Year

From holes-in-one, to hole-out eagles and Race to Dubai clinching moments, we have trawled through hundreds of world class shots and narrowed them down to ten of the best for you.

10: Álvaro Quirós, 2011

Coming in at number ten is Álvaro Quirós’ eagle putt from downtown that won the 2011 edition of the DP World Tour Championship for the Spaniard. With Paul Lawrie applying the pressure on Quirós, many expected the six-time European Tour winner to lag his putt up safely. Álvaro however, had other ideas.

9: Henrik Stenson, 2014

Henrik Stenson is a man for the big occasion. So when the Swede reached the tee at the par three 17th hole on the final day in 2014 locked in a three-way tie for the lead with Rory McIlroy and Justin Rose, he delivered a moment of brilliance right on cue.

A 195-yard five iron to within a foot of the penultimate flag helped secure the DP World Tour Championship title for the second year in succession for Stenson, who went on to win by two shots.

8: Rory McIlroy, 2015

Leading The Race to Dubai heading into the final event of the season in 2015, Rory McIlroy reached the 18th green in his first round at three under par after a relatively low-key day by Rory’s very high Dubai standards.

In the bunker in three shots, most players would have been thinking about getting up and down to save par. Not Rory, though, who holed his bunker shot, before going on to win the DP World Tour Championship for a second time, and the Race to Dubai for a third time.

7: Martin Kaymer, 2010

Then still just 25, Martin Kaymer was full of confidence when he came to the 2010 DP World Tour Championship having already won four European Tour titles that season, including the US PGA Championship. Although the German was the overwhelming favourite to seal the European Number One spot, he still had work to do.

However, when Kaymer holed out with a seven iron for a walk-off eagle at the third hole to move to three under par through as many holes, any doubts over his ability to seal a maiden Race to Dubai title were firmly dispelled.

6: Charl Schwartzel, 2010

Heading on to the 186-yard sixth on the back of an eagle at the previous hole, Charl Schwartzel was feeling good about his game. But after leaving the sixth green he was feeling ecstatic, with the South African acing the par three thanks to a pinpoint seven iron, which saw his ball land five feet short of the cup before trickling in. Four under par through two holes – not bad.

5: Robert Karlsson, 2010

Shortly after Kaymer had holed out for a spectacular eagle on day one of the 2010 edition of the DP World Tour Championship, Robert Karlsson did exactly the same at the 14th hole on the way to winning his 11th European Tour title.

4: Francesco Molinari, 2015

After starting his final round at Jumeirah Golf Estates with five consecutive pars nothing much appeared to be happening for Francesco Molinari. However a seven iron at the 186 yard sixth hole changed all that.

3: Alex Noren, 2009

Although it is hard to imagine now, with Alex Noren the most in-form player on the European Tour thanks to four victories this season, the Swede only had one European Tour win to his name when he came to Dubai in 2009.

After finding the rough with his second shot on the par five 18th hole and with a tricky looking lie, a par looked the likely outcome for Noren. The now eight-time European Tour winner hit an unbelievable escape, though, to somehow make the most unlikely of eagles.

2: Shane Lowry, 2014

If you are going to make your first professional hole-in-one you might as well make it in the season finale, as Shane Lowry did at the 13th hole two years ago at this event.

Playing alongside Rory McIlroy, a six iron from 183 yards did the job for Lowry, who went on to finish in fifth place as he broke into the world’s top 50 for the first time.

1: Henrik Stenson, 2013

The definition of the stuff of dreams? Hitting the European Tour Shot of the Year to the 18th green on the final day of the 2013 season to win both The Race to Dubai and the season-ending tournament itself.

That is exactly what Henrik Stenson did three years ago as his incredible three wood from way back down the fairway came to rest just a couple of feet from the hole, leaving Stenson with a tap-in eagle. The occasion, the execution and the celebration – it was all perfect.
