“I have been carried along on a tide of emotion since Sunday night and feel physically and emotionally drained by the euphoria of The Ryder Cup victory," said Torrance in a statement. "I also have a problem with my neck which is causing some discomfort and in the circumstances I don’t feel fully prepared to play this week.
“I have enormous respect for the dunhill links championship but I believe it is in my best interests, and in the interests of my amateur playing partners, that I withdraw. I am desperately disappointed to miss the opportunity to play over three great links courses but look forward to returning here in the future. In the meantime I intend spending some time at home with my family.”
Torrance’s place in the field will be taken by Robert-Jan Derksen of Holland. Ronan Rafferty of Northern Ireland has also withdrawn due to a wrist injury and is replaced by Sebastien Delagrange of France.
