Townsend leads Open qualifiers

Nicholas Cullen and Ashley Hall came through a play-off to join fellow Australian Aaron Townsend in sealing a place at The Open Championship following a blustery qualifying event in Melbourne.

Townsend ensured his place at Royal Lytham & St Annes by carding an impressive best-of-the-day one under 70 at the Kingston Heath Golf Club after play had been held up for two hours because of severe winds.

That put him four under for his two rounds, a three-shot lead over Cullen, Hall and Peter Senior.

The trio went into a play-off to decide the remaining two places, but it was Senior, a veteran of 18 Opens who finished sixth at Lytham in 1988, who missed out.

He parred the first play-off hole, allowing Cullen and Hall to book their places with birdies.
