Play was pushed into a Monday finish due to darkness following a 90-minute delay to storms on Sunday, with both players finishing the regulation 72 holes on 21 under par at TPC River Highlands.

That was after a dramatic finish that saw World Number One Scheffler hole an eight-foot par putt to force extra holes after Hovland earlier missed a 25-foot birdie putt for victory.

After both players found the fairway with their tee shots on the first play-off hole, the 18th, Scheffler produced an excellent approach shot to four feet to heap the pressure on Hovland but the European Ryder Cup star responded as he hit his to seven feet.

Hovland pumped his fist in celebration as he made his birdie putt, with his ball just catching enough of the hole's right edge, before he watched on as Scheffler surprisingly missed to the left.

It is the Norwegian's first victory worldwide since last year's Valspar Championship and lifts him to 12th in the Official World Golf Ranking.

"It has been stressful but it was unbelievable, especially after Scottie hit it so close," said Hovland.

"I knew I had to bring my best to have a chance of beating him. He certainly brought it out of me and I couldn't be happier."

Hovland is next set to be in action at the Genesis Scottish Open - co-sanctioned with the PGA TOUR - next month, before competing at The Open in the final men's Major Championship of the season.
