Defending champion Anthony Wall made a clutch birdie putt on the last to claim a one up win over Sam Walker and advance to the second round of the Saltire Energy Paul Lawrie Match Play.
Wall produced one of the stories of last season when he claimed his second European Tour win at Archerfield Links, 16 years and 204 days after this first.
The 64-man knockout event this year moves to Golf Resort Bad Griesbach but Wall continued his winning run against fellow Englishman Walker, who entered as first reserve after the withdrawal of Kristoffer Broberg.
Walker won the second before Wall took the third, fifth, sixth and eighth but birdies on the ninth and tenth saw Walker fight back. Wall won the 12th but Walker was back level after winning the 15th and 16th, leaving Wall a lengthy putt on the last for a birdie and the win.
"We played well," said Wall. "He wasn't so good off the tee and then made birdies at nine and ten holing long putts and then it was game on. I just managed to keep hold of him and it was difficult and I got my chance at the last and made three so that was fantastic.
"If you've done something in that field before once or twice you can draw from that and if you have those nervous patches you can go 'I've done it before, why can't I do it again?', and that's how I try and draw through all my golf."
The 42 year old will next face South African Haydn Porteous who beat Frenchman Grégory Havret 2 and 1 in a bad start for the seeds in Bavaria.
The duo were all square after 12 holes but Porteous won the 13th with a birdie and when a par was enough to take the 16th, the 24th seed was heading home.
Dane Lucas Bjerregaard and home favourite Florian Fritsch will face off in round two after they both beat seeded players in the morning.
Bjerregaard made six birdies in a row from the ninth and while American Daniel Im did not drop a shot over that run, he simply could not keep pace with his big-hitting opponent going down 6 and 4.
"It started on nine when he almost holed his second shot and it rolled maybe five feet past," said Bjerregaard. "He put the pressure on me, I hit in to 12 feet, made the putt, and then he missed his and that kind of put the momentum over on me.
"The GolfSixes was a lot of fun. I've always enjoyed match play but the last couple of years I haven't had much success here. It was nice to get an early win."
Fritsch and Oliver Fisher won four holes apiece to head up the last all square but a bogey on the 18th from the Englishman ended his week.
Scotland's Scott Jamieson was another seed to be heading home as he lost one up after 22 holes to Chris Paisley, with the Englishman next taking on countryman Nathan Kimsey, a 2 and 1 winner over James Morrison.
Spaniard Adrian Otaegui was a brilliant nine under par in his 16 holes as he beat France's Gary Stal 4 and 2, and he will next face Italian Nino Bertasio who was a 2 and 1 winner over England's Chris Hanson.
Nicolas Colsaerts knows a thing or two about match play with a Volvo World Match Play victory and a winning Ryder Cup appearance under his belt but the Belgian made just a single birdie as he lost 4 and 3 to China's Ashun Wu.
Swede Rikard Karlberg is next up for Wu as he made seven birdies in a 5 and 4 win over England's Matt Wallace.
France's Raphaël Jacquelin was one down against Scot David Drysdale stood on the 16th tee but won the last three holes and he will take on Robert Rock after the Englishman put his tee-shot on the 20th hole to tap-in range to beat another Scotsman in Marc Warren.
Ryder Cup winner Jamie Donaldson birdied the 14th, 15th, 16th and 17th to beat American Paul Peterson 2 and 1 and set up a clash against Spaniard Jorge Campillo, who beat Chile's Felipe Aguilar by the same score.
England's Ashley Chesters beat Portuguese Ricardo Gouveia 4 and 2 and will take on Edoardo Molinari next, who won the longest match in the history of the Paul Lawrie Match Play.
Ryder Cup Vice Captain Robert Karlsson made a double-bogey on the last but it was enough to send the match to extra holes as Molinari made a triple before redeeming himself and claiming victory on the 24th hole.
