What's in the bag - Alvaro Quiros

It was another superlative season- ending Dubai World Championship presented by DP World as The European Tour signed off for 2011 on a real high, but now that the dust – or sand in this case – has settled, just what did it take for Alvaro Quiros to complete the second half of his Dubai double.

We all know that he can crush a golf ball from the tee, having been the longest on Tour with the driver in his hand four of the last five years on the Genworth Statistics. However, this week truly was an example of big hitting, as he finished first on the ranking with an average of 310.9 yards, some 7.4 longer than second placed man in that category, Belgium’s Nicolas Colsaerts.

But there is more to Alvaro Quiros than just prodigious length. He also proved this week that he possesses accuracy into the greens as well, hitting 83.3 per cent of them and ranking second on the week. This is even more impressive when compared to his season long average, which is a full 12.3 per cent worse than his dominant display in Dubai.

Quiros also wielded the wand better than usual, ranking sixth in putts per GIR with 1.681, a measured improvement on a stat he is already proven quite proficient in during this season. In 2011 he only averaged 0.074 strokes more per GIR, and this equated to a position of 18th within this statistical category for the season, which is very respectable.

His success with the putter also showed in his putts per round performance, ranking 20th on the week with 29.5, compared with his 2011 figures of 29.7 to rank 74th on the Tour.

It was clearly a very special week for Quiros, who rubber stamped his impressive credentials in the desert, having won the Omega Dubai Desert Classic earlier in the year and the Commercialbank Qatar Masters in 2010. With his confidence restored heading into the new year, and the desert swing once more just around the corner, there would surely be little surprise if the big hitting Spaniard was lifting some more silverware over the next couple of months.
