We took a look inside the bag of Jamie Donaldson, who picked up his second European Tour title in eight months at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship last week.
The key to the Welshman’s success was an all-round game that saw him rank highly in a number of categories in theGenworth Financial Statisticswhich resulted in a one stroke win over Thorbjørn Olesen and Justin Rose.
Overall, Donaldson based his title assault on accuracy from the tee and into the greens, backed up by solid putting, if not table topping.
His play from the tee saw him hit 60.7 per cent of the fairways to rank 15thin the field, while he fared a touch better with an average distance of 294.8 yards to place seventh for the week.
Impressive numbers, which were complemented by finding 75 per cent of his Greens in Regulation to rank eighth.
Such accuracy, into the greens especially, can often mean that putting statistics can suffer and in this case that was true to a point, with Donaldson finishing 23rdin Putts per GIR and 17thin Putts per Round.
Numbers can only tell so much though, and the real key to Donaldson’s victory was his ability to make the necessary birdies when it mattered during Sunday’s final round, and as a result he could even afford a bogey on the last en route to a one stroke win.
As a result the Welshman jumps to second on The Race to Dubai and a career high 29thon the Official World Golf Ranking.
