What's in the Bag - Julien Quesne

We find out what it takes to become the 400th winner on The European Tour as we go inside the bag, and the stats, of Open de Andalucía Costa del Sol winner Julien Quesne.

With Aloha being one of the shorter venues on this year’s schedule, and a dry winter having limited the growth of the rough, this week was all about accuracy to the small greens and a deadly instinct with the putter.

When looking at the stats from the week you can see that Quesne certainly subscribed to this, ranking poorly in accuracy from the tee but particularly precise to, and on, the greens.

Quesne only managed to rank 35th in driving accuracy across the four rounds, something that may have been punished more heavily at a different venue, but with the rough still allowing the field to attack the pins, the Frenchman did just that ranking fifth in Greens in Regulation.

However, Aloha makes up for its lack of length with some incredibly undulating greens, making the approaches tricky. But down the last hole on Sunday Quesne proved that he was up to the task firing in a rapier-like long iron that bounded up the tier at the back of the green and to within ten feet of the hole. The 18th had proved difficult throughout the week, but on Sunday it was no match for Quesne, who birdied for a two shot win.

And this highlights the other flawless area of the 2011 Challenge Tour graduate’s game, his ability to hole under pressure. He ranked seventh in Putts per GIR this last week, and eighth in Putts per Round averaging 29.3, which complimented his imperious long game, especially on Sunday, en route to the title.

All these numbers added up to a stroke average of 67.75 for the week, a score of 17 under par, and a maiden win for Julien Quesne – the 400th different winner on The European Tour.
