Englishman Danny Willett’s stunning 2015 season on The European Tour continued as he moved into second place behind World Number One Rory McIlroy in The Race to Dubai thanks to a one stroke victory over Matthew Fitzpatrick in the Omega European Masters.
Willett, who won in his first outing of the season at the lucrative Nedbank Golf Challenge and finished third at the prestigious WGC-Cadillac Championship and tied sixth at The Open Championship, pocketed €450,000 for his stunning victory at Crans-sur Sierre Golf Club, taking his points total in The 2015 Race to Dubai to 2,548,439..
The 27 year old is now just 327,206 points behind the injured McIlroy and comfortably assured of his spot in the season-ending DP World Tour Championship, Dubai, taking place at Jumeirah Golf Estates from Thursday November 19 to Sunday November 22.
Last year in Dubai, Willett partnered amateur Dipesh Makwana in the Rolex Pro-Am after Makwana won the ‘Luckiest Ball on Earth’ local qualifying series.
European Challenge Tour graduate and former US Amateur Champion Fitzpatrick is also within touching distance of a guaranteed place among The Race to Dubai’s top 60 who are eligible for DP World Tour Championship in November.
Another wonderfully consistent performance in Switzerland earned the 20 year old second place prize money of €300,000 and moved him to 40th place with 523,689 points – 550,000 points typically being enough to book a spot in the Dubai showcase.
Tyrrell Hatton, who also graduated from the Challenge Tour, at the end of the 2013 season, fired a joint low round of the week with a 62 on Sunday to secure third place and €169,020 which moved him to 36th in The Race to Dubai with 588,665 points.
South Africa’s Louis Oosthuizen moved down a place to third in The Race to Dubai while Austrian Bernd Weisberger and South African Branden Grace complete the top five with three and a half months of this captivating 2015 season left to play.
