Woods and Daly Join Europe's Finest In Heidelberg

John Daly and Tiger Woods have both confirmed that they will contest the Deutsche Bank-SAP Open TPC of Europe at St.Leon-Rot, Heidelberg, Germany from May 17-20. Woods will defend the title he won at the same venue last year while Daly makes his first appearance in the event.

Woods, in fact, has won two of the last three editions of the tournament while Daly – now a Member of The European Tour – has been successful in his most recent visits to Germany, notably in winning the BMW International Open in Munich and finishing second to Bernhard Langer in the Linde German Masters in Cologne.

Daly said: “I like playing in Germany. My good results show that. To play in the field with Tiger motivates me even more“, said the long-hitter who is already looking forward to the duel with Woods.

Woods, who has won twice in Heidelberg, commented: “It’’s an especially nice feeling to be able to start in the Deutsche Bank –SAP Open TPC of Open at St. Leon-Rot as the title holder. I will try to complete the title hat trick despite the strong competition“, said the 26 year old.

Also playing in the event are Thomas Björn, Michael Campbell, Padraig Harrington, Germany’’s favourite son, Bernhard Langer and US Open Champion, Retief Goosen. The South African said: “I am looking forward to a high class event and I will do my best to leave Tiger Woods and the other top players behind me.”

Another highlight will be the start of only 17-year-old Ty Tryon in this year’’s Deutsche Bank – SAP Open. The young star made the golf world marvel at the end of last year when he secured himself the right to play in the US PGA Tour as youngest player of all times. Golf legend Jack Nicklaus attests the shooting star: “This is someone who might become dangerous to Tiger.“

The strong competitors’’ field of the Deutsche Bank – SAP Open 2002 is completed by the German members of the PGA European Tour Sven Strüver, Alexander Cejka, Tobias Dier, Erol Simsek and Marcel Siem.

Especially pleased about the excellent starter field are the two title sponsors Deutsche Bank AG and SAP AG. It fills the name lenders and the other important sponsors and outfitters of the event with special pride to be able to present the spectators at St. Leon-Rot world-class sport live.

To make it possible for each fan to experience his stars from a very close distance, entrance tickets will be limited to 20,000 tickets per day. In order to give last-minute spectators the chance to be there, however, at least 5,000 tickets daily will be available at the box offices.

In addition to the happenings at the course the physical well-being of the guests will be taken care of in the “Public Centre“ and in various beer gardens of up to 2,200 sq.m in area.
