Woods closes gap on Wi

South Korea’s Charlie Wi continued to set the pace in the Pebble Beach National Pro-Am in California as Tiger Woods forced his way into contention with a run of five birdies in six holes.

Second round leader Wi had a bogey free round of 69 at Spyglass Hill to move to 15 under overall.

That put him three clear of American Ken Duke, yet it was the performance of Woods which attracted the most attention. The former World Number One went round Pebble Beach in 67 and will begin the final round in third, just four behind Wi.

Woods told the PGA Tour website: “I hit my putts as well I did the last couple of days. This time they went in.

“I’ve got a chance going into [Sunday]. Obviously I have to put together another good round and possibly go even lower.”

Wi has yet to win on the PGA Tour and will hope to succeed where Kyle Stanley and Spencer Levin have failed in recent weeks by holding on to the 54-hole lead.

Stanley blew a five shot lead at Torrey Pines, and then claimed victory at last week’s Phoenix Open after Levin had let a six shot advantage slip.

"I haven't really thought about that," Wi said, when asked if it were a blessing or a burden to be in front. "But I enjoy being in the lead. It's a lot more fun than trying to come from behind.

“I know that tonight is going to be very exciting, and I'm sure I won't sleep as well as if I'm in 50th place. But that's what we play for, and I'm really excited."

Five players, including Phil Mickelson, Hunter Mahan and Dustin Johnson - a two-time winner of this event - shared fourth on nine under, while Ireland’s Padraig Harrington was among those a shot further back, alongside home duo Bob Estes and Ricky Barnes.
