Woods to the fore as Scott and Garcia challenge

Tiger Woods shot a brilliant 28 over the front nine of his second round of 63 at The Tour Championship, presented by Coca-Cola, to move closer to sealing victory in the inaugural FedEx-Cup series on the US PGA Tour.

Woods is on a 36 hole total of 13 under par 127 after rounds of 64-63 at the East Lake Course in Atlanta, Georgia, and leads by three from fellow American Woody Austin, who has shot 65-65.

The European Tour Members challenge is being led by Australia’s Adam Scott, who is on nine under par 131 after scores of 65-66. Spain’s Sergio Garcia is tied for sixth spot on eight under par 132 after scores of 68-64.

Ireland’s Padraig Harrington, in second place after his first round of 63, shot a 70 to drop back to tied eighth place on seven under par 133.

Fiji’s Vijay Singh is on four under par 136 after two consecutive rounds of 68, while South Africa’s Ernie Els is on two under par 138 after carding two consecutive rounds of 69.

England’s Justin Rose shot a one over par 71, to go with his opening 69, to lie even par and in tied 27th place in the elite 30 man field.

However, it was Woods who once more came to the fore with his scintillating score.

“I didn’t know I’d shot 28 until I got into the scoring tent and we added it up,” said Woods. “You just play shot for shot. In certain tournaments, you’ve just got to make a bunch of birdies and this is one of them. I mean, Padraig is a shot back going into the second round and then shoots even, and most of the field runs over him.”

Woods is seeking his seventh win of the season. “That was the goal for the week. At the halfway point, I’m in good shape.”
